Crocker made his First Grade debut in 2001 for the Sydney Roosters. In doing so, he became the 1000th player to play for the club.[3] During his career with the Roosters, he made three consecutive Grand Final appearances between 2002 and 2004 which included a premiership in 2002. In the 2004 decider against the Canterbury Bulldogs, Crocker was the last player to touch the ball in the game. Trailing 16-13 and with less than seconds left on the game, Crocker appeared to make a break down the right hand side of the field about 30 metres out from the Canterbury line but lost control of the ball when Andrew Ryan desperately made contact with his arms which dislodged the ball.
Crocker made his State of Origin debut whilst playing with the Sydney Roosters in 2003, where he scored a try on debut in the second match of the series.[4]
After signing with the Melbourne Storm in 2006 he became the Storm's lucky charm; in the three years he has been with Melbourne, he has only played in two losing teams. In the 2006 preliminary final match against the St George Illawarra Dragons he injured his knee, forcing him to miss the Grand Final match against the Brisbane Broncos, which Melbourne lost. He was part of their victorious 2007 NRL Grand Final team against Manly-Warringah.[5] His contribution to the win was highlighted when he nutted Manly fullback Brett Stewart with a massive hit. Several minutes later, Crocker scored a decisive try.
Crocker performance in the Grand Final earned him a bench position in the 2007 New Zealand v Australia Centenary Test, his first international selection since 2004.
In 2005, Michael Crocker assaulted police during an alcohol-fueled disturbance outside a Sydney hotel. Pleaded guilty to affray and fined $10,000[6][7]
Notorious for his high and other dangerous tackles, Crocker has missed a number of games through suspension. Since 2001, Crocker has faced ten judiciary charges, and been suspended for a total of 21 weeks.[8]
Hull FC have confirmed they have signed Crocker on a three-year contract from the 2009 season.[9][10][11]
Crocker had been linked with a move to current European Super League and World Club Challenge winners Leeds Rhinos.[12] He had also spoken to the London-based franchise Harlequins Rugby League.
Australian national coach Ricky Stuart has declared English-bound forward Michael Crocker had played his last game for Australia.[13]
In August, 2008, Crocker was named in the preliminary 46-man Kangaroos squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup despite comments by Kangaroos' coach, Ricky Stuart, that he would not select players leaving Australia to play in England in 2009.[14][15]
He played in the 2008 NRL Grand Final defeat to the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.[16]
He had been named in the Australia squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup,[17] but had to withdraw through injury and was replaced by Anthony Tupou.[18]
